A New Tomorrow That Starts Today
By Meir Tati
In 2021, I worked with Meir Tati, an artist and curator from Israel, on his piece A New Tomorrow That Starts Today. Firstly, I was a performer in his video Action Number 11, which took speeches from sci-fi and superhero movies and recontextualized them in a society filled with mutants composed of fragmented, diverse political leaders. Secondly, we worked to make his piece more accessible to museum visitors. We held conversations about the elements of his exhibition, and we identified ways to incorporate the Deaf and hard-of-hearing community. I coordinated with Pittsburgh’s American Sign Language (ASL) Poet Laureate in 2021, Maryjean (Mj) Shahen, to create an ASL version of the dialogue in Tati’s video. In addition, I encouraged Tati to add subtitles to all of his content for the exhibition.
